BMI 39.9
BMI 35 to 39.9 is Severely obsese
You are at high risk of suffering health problems and even death. Obesity is one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide. If you are worried about your weight then you should seek professional help and advice.
Severely obsese
There are several obesity-related health conditions that are associated with obesity and with a BMI of 39.9.
These conditions often lead to a decreased quality of health and life of those affected. Below you will find a list of obesity-related conditions. It is important to talk with your doctor about these conditions.
- Cancer
Cancer involves the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells that have mutated from normal tissues. These cells prevent normal function of vital organs, damaging essential systems.
- Diabetes
Diabetes is a life-long disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. It can be caused by too little insulin (a hormone produced by the pancreas to regulate blood sugar), resistance to insulin, or both.
- Heartburn
Heartburn is a painful burning sensation in the esophagus, just below the breastbone. The pain often rises in your chest and may radiate to your neck or throat.
- Gallbladder disease
Gallbladder disease includes inflammation, infection, stones, or obstruction of the gallbladder.
- Heart disease
Heart disease is any disorder that affects the heart’s ability to function normally. The most common cause of heart disease is narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart.
- High cholesterol
Lipid disorders are when you have excess fatty substances in your blood. These substances include cholesterol and triglycerides. Having a lipid disorder makes you more likely to develop arteriosclerosis and heart disease.
- High blood pressure
Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg).
Hypertension (high blood pressure) is when your blood pressure frequently goes over 140/90 mm Hg.
- Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a chronic disease causing deterioration of the joint and the formation of new bone at the margins of the joints.
Both BMI and a measure of fat distribution (waist circumference) are important in calculating the risk of obesity co-morbidities. However, amongst the severely obese, waist circumference adds little to the absolute measure of risk provided by BMI.
Severely obsese treatment
Severe obesity has many of the same causes and some similar risks as obesity, but you will find that they differ mostly with treatment strategies.
Severe obesity is a complex issue and has many causes. It is a serious disease that needs to be prevented and treated. Like obesity, the causes of severe obesity are widespread, but target three main contributors: behavior, environment and genetics.
Behavior modification therapy
The purpose of behavior modification therapy in obese people is to help change behaviors that contribute to obesity and initiate new dietary and physical activity behaviors that are needed to lose weight. Behavioral therapy for obesity should involve:
- Developing specific and realistic goals that can be easily measured.
- Developing a reasonable plan for reaching those goals.
- Making incremental changes to promote successful experiences that can be used as a foundation for additional lifestyle alterations
Dietary interventions and behavioral changes are frequently referred to as lifestyle modification and are the cornerstone of obesity treatment.
Lifestyle modification is distinct from dieting. Dieting implies adhering to a particular regimen for a discrete period of time, whereas lifestyle modification involves implementing dietary and behavioral changes that can be sustained indefinitely to promote health.
